Video: A mental shift from being busy.
Keep reminding yourself why you are drawn to this practice.
Establishing your 'intention' is key. It reminds you of your reasons for meditating, especially when motivation waxes and wanes (because it will).
Cultivating composure.
Most people are drawn to meditation for serenity and insight...seeking calm, inner peace and to slow down their 'chatty' minds...particularly when wanting to concentrate or fall asleep.
Attempting to 'reduce the inner chatter', will only do the opposite. Have you ever attempted it? Did it work? In most cases, it's a resounding no.
Not making it happen.
With these universal and secular practices, the key is letting go. It's the opposite of most physical exercise, where resistance is necessary.
Once your intention is clear and set, it's time to create conditions that will get you there, step by step.
Cultivate the conditions for it to manifest i.e. if you want stability, start by sitting in a stable physical posture, even if for a few minutes. Observe your reality as it is (not as you want it or don't want it to be).
You'll sit through distractions, imagination, thinking...even mental storms. Deep peace, elation and being grounded; will also happen. And the myriad of experiences in between, at other times.
Yet, little by little, part by part; you'll develop stability.
